Spirituality

At Ennerdale CE Primary School, spirituality is at the heart of our vision, culture and daily life. Rooted in the Christian narrative You are the Light of the World” (Matthew 5:14), we seek to help every child recognise their own unique light and the light they can bring to others. Spiritual development is not something separate from learning; it is woven through everything we do; our relationships, our environment, our curriculum, and our experiences.

A Shared Spiritual Vocabulary

To support children’s understanding of spirituality and to make this part of school life meaningful and accessible, we use a shared, age-appropriate vocabulary. This common language helps us all, children, staff, and families, talk about spiritual growth in a simple, consistent and inspiring way.

Our vocabulary is based on the analogy of a candle: Spark, Flame, Glow and Shine. Each word helps us explore different aspects of spiritual development and encourages children to recognise moments of meaning in their own lives.

Living Out Our Vision

Our candle vocabulary helps children not only understand spirituality, but also experience it. Through collective worship, RE, outdoor learning, and moments of reflection throughout the school day, children learn to recognise their own light and the light in others.

By nurturing the spark, feeding the flame, noticing the glow, and encouraging every child to shine, we help them grow into thoughtful, compassionate individuals who know that their lives have purpose and value.
